Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) provide individuals with one-on-one professional counselling. EAPs assist in the identification and resolution of a range of both work-related or personal issues which are affecting job performance.
EAPs are beneficial when they are conducted by third-party professionals outside the organisation. This gives employees strict confidentiality and a sense of psychological ‘safety’, so they can be completely open and honest. This benefit might be compromised if the service is provided in–house.
EAPs also give employees insight into their behaviour and this can be used to develop strategies to resolve the situation. EAPs have become a key service in organisations with the increasing recognition of the importance of employee wellbeing, particularly with Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) workers in the mining and resources industry. Individuals gain numerous benefits from the process, and the resulting increased job satisfaction, motivation and commitment from the employee has an impact on performance and productivity for the organisation. The resulting improvement in morale can also transfer to other employees.
